Recently, Dreamhaven Games launched Wildgate, a PvP multiplayer shooter from ex-Blizzard developers, but the results paint a sobering picture of today’s gaming landscape. Despite the pedigree of its creators and generally positive reviews, Wildgate has struggled dramatically in the marketplace.

The Numbers Tell a Harsh Story

One month after launch, Wildgate had sold just 130,000 units on Steam. The situation became so dire that founder Mike Morhaime (former Blizzard president) was forced to slash the game’s price by one-third, dropping it from $27 SGD to $17 SGD. But Wildgate isn’t alone in its struggles – Dreamhaven’s other title, Sunderfolk, has fared even worse, selling only 62,000 copies since its April debut.

The financial reality is stark: Dreamhaven lost $11.7 million on just $1.4 million in sales last year. As Morhaime candidly admitted in a letter to staff, “Our monthly expenses are outpacing revenue,” with the company now “urgently” focused on cost reduction and actively seeking new financing just to survive.

“Our monthly expenses are outpacing revenue,” Morhaime said in the letter, adding that Dreamhaven’s focus is to now “urgently” reduce costs.

He added that he is “committed” to making sure the studio survives its current financial turmoil.

Wildgate looks like an interesting game, definitely has that old Blizzard Game feel from the old devs that used to work there, but I am not sure if it misses the mark with newer gamers who have abundant choices to play any multiplayer game such as Fortnite or Marvel Rivals which are all free.

The Cruel Irony of Quality vs. Sales

What makes this particularly striking is that both games have received generally positive reviews. Wildgate does indeed capture that classic Blizzard game feel that made those developers legendary. This represents the cruel new reality of gaming: even good games from talented developers can fail commercially.

The Perfect Storm of Market Challenges

Several factors are working against games like Wildgate:

The Free-to-Play Dominance: Why pay $20-29 for a multiplayer game when Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, and countless other high-quality options are free? Even a reduced price point struggles against “zero cost” competitors that have mastered monetization through other means.

Audience Saturation: We may genuinely be reaching a saturation point where there simply isn’t enough player attention to go around. The gaming market is flooded with options, creating what industry insiders are calling an “industry glut.”

Economic Pressures: In challenging economic times, even $20 feels steep for multiplayer games, especially when players are uncertain about finding active player bases to justify the purchase.

Fragmented Attention: People increasingly prefer quick, passive entertainment like doom scrolling over the investment required to learn and master new games, even excellent ones.

The Broader Industry Warning

Dreamhaven’s struggles serve as a canary in the coal mine for the broader gaming industry. If experienced developers with proven track records and quality products can’t find success, what does this mean for the sustainability of premium multiplayer games?

While success stories like Helldivers 2 prove it’s still possible to break through, they’re becoming the exception rather than the rule. The market has fundamentally shifted, and even legendary developers are learning that past success doesn’t guarantee future viability in today’s oversaturated, free-to-play-dominated landscape.

The Dreamhaven situation isn’t just about one company’s struggles – it’s a stark reminder that in today’s gaming ecosystem, quality alone isn’t enough to ensure success.

Listened to the KindaFunny on this and Wildgate was mentioned in passing, in line with why PlayStation concord failed.
