Veteran game developer John Carmack recently warned aspiring entrepreneurs that starting a game company is a brutally challenging endeavor.

The market is highly saturated, rewards are often disproportionate to the risk, and new studios should expect to burn through hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars just to get a title off the ground. [Fenado.ai, Reddit]

If you are determined to start a studio, Carmack recommends a strictly pragmatic, lean approach.

Here is what I took away is from his post

Carmack’s Studio Blueprint

The “Smallest Viable Product”

Resist the urge to over-scope. Instead, start by building the smallest, most concise game that someone will actually pay for.

this means building out demos on steam and seeing what would resonate with the audience.

There is also the TikTok and YouTube route where you can make a trailer and funnel to a landing page for email sign ups ✍️ 🆙 and keep those interested about development.

Leverage Technology and Past Projects

Reuse code and foundational technology from your past projects. Treat every game as a building block for the next, letting you iterate on proven mechanics rather than building every system from scratch.

Make it Uniquely Singular:

The market is flooded with generic titles. To have a fighting chance, your game must offer a distinct, singularly unique experience or concept.

I do think his thoughts is to make a game with a distinct voice some of the indie games have unique mechanics, interesting artstyles or a unique trend they set.

But these takes time to find a voice for your game and many trials and errors.

Brutal Focus

Avoid infinite analysis or never-ending planning. If you aren’t sure which design or programming path to take, rapidly implement both, test them, and keep the one that performs better

keeping scope down i did face some scope creep in making games and trying to keep things to a single experience helps to ship the game and be distinct.

Takeaway

I do agree with John Carmack on Market saturation. It’s quite hard to break in these days. I do feel you need to find a core group you want to build experiences for and serve them.

In this period of gaming, will need unconventional methods to acquire users. Right now it looks like on mobile Gacha mechanics reigns.

I don’t think that everyone come out with millions, but I think there can be some sustainable way to build a small business.
