W1 Curates interviewing Craig Mullins (Tiktok) about advice he would give to artist today. This was filmed during the 2024 art gallery show by Craig Mullins.
The advice is about being an artist an not just another designer freelancer where you make money drawing someone else idea. He was echoing the dreamworks idea by Jeffery Katzenberg that AI can replace artists and cut down production time. And the only way forward is to be a fine artist.
Already this is happening with Gen Ai being used more and more and I do see there is going to be less and less need for physical human input if corporations can prompt their way out to a movie eventually.
Now there is nothing wrong with that helping someone else solving visual design, problems it’s still will be around even with Gen AI coming on. But as time goes by you will feel that your own ideas might get shafted.
Craig talked candidly that most of his work in the 30 years as a digital painter was work for someone else and that is money not going into this pocket long term.
Looking forward eventually everyone needs to think more like a fine artist making your own art to sell. The issue is how do you tell a story or narrative that will get viewers, users interested to buy. These are the new storytelling skills artist will need to develop alongside technical art skills
I did remember reading on the Van Schneider Blog about eventually you will want to be an artist but to do that you need a strong POV and Personality.
Developing the artist skills is the challenge as it’s not something you can acquire easily through study.
